Gajasamharar is one of the forms of Lord Siva, an anger-mood dance of Siva (Gaja means Elephant; Samhara means killing – destroying). This is a very finest Stone sculpture of our Art Gallery. An arresting image of perfect beauty and wonderful marvelous posture in Stone by the Chola Sculptors of 12 th Century.
A puranic story is behind this posture of Lord Siva. Some sages in THARUGAVANAM sent one very big mighty elephant towards Lord Siva to kill him. Lord Siva caught hold of the elephant upwards down and pressed it’s head with his right leg and tore it’s stomach and hooked the skin of the elephant and covered his body as Shawl and dancing in a ferocious mood by twisting his hip.
If we see from the left side of the sculpture, we can realize a grace in his left eye with a gentle smiling towards his Consort Parvathi and his son infant Muruga and at the same time on seeing from the right side, we can realize his ferocious mood in the right eye which viewing upwards. Expression of two feelings in a single stone is the special talent of the Chola Sculptors.
கஜாசுர சம்ஹாரர்
கஜாசுர சம்ஹாரர், அறுபத்து மூன்று சிவ திருமேனிகளுள் ஒன்றாக சைவர்களால் வணங்கப்படும் வடிவமாகவும். கஜாசுரனுடன் எனும் அரக்கனை அழித்த சிவனின் திருவுருவத்திற்கு கஜாசுர சம்ஹாரர் என்று பெயர். இவரை யானை உரித்த பெருமான் என்று தமிழும் கூறுகின்றனர்.
திருவுருவக் காரணம்
கஜாசுரன் எனும் அசுரன் பிரம்மாவை நோக்கி தவமிருந்து வரத்தினை பெற்றவன். சிவனைத் தவிற மற்ற அனைவரையும் வெல்லும் வலிமை பெற்றான். அவனை அழித்திட சிவன் பிரம்மாண்ட உருவம் எடுத்தார். கயாசுரனை தனது திருவடியால் உதைக்க, அவன் கழிந்த கோலத்தில் உலகின் மீது விழுந்தான். மற்றொரு திருவடியால் அவனது தலையை மிதித்து தொடையில் ஊன்றியவாறே தனது நகங்களால் பிளந்து அவனது தோலை கதறக் கதற உரித்திழுத்தார். கயாசுரனின் தோலை தன் மீது போர்த்தி சாந்த மடைந்தார். இந்த வடிவத்திற்கு கஜயுத்த மூர்த்தி என்றும் பெயர்.
